I almost had a panic attack when I first saw Jared in my uncles’ living room. But he controlled the narrative and made sure my uncles had no reason to suspect we’d already met. And certainly not in their club.

Knowing that they were trying to push us together made it much easier for me to relax at the party. I stayed by Jared’s side the entire night, only stepping away when the girls asked me to be the judge of the gingerbread houses.

Each of the six creations were impressive in their own right, boasting unique characteristics that seemed beyond the years of the children. But as the professional Maker in the group, I knew they valued my opinion, and I wanted to be fair.

Which was why I came up with a category for each of the houses.

Miley won the Tallest Structure title because she managed to create a four-story townhouse. It looked like it wouldn’t survive more than a gentle breeze, but it was upright at the moment of judging, and that was good enough.

Misty went more Hans Christian Andersen and built something right out of a classic fairytale. She won the Most Traditional title, which she was very proud of.

Avery, one of the other kids, went with a Hanukkah theme and won the Most Unexpected title. The only boy in the group earned the title of having the Strongest House because he insulated and double-layered each of his exterior walls. It was actually quite impressive.

Jena, the oldest in the group, went with a modern design that had sharp angles and a living roof. She got the Most Environmentally Friendly honor.

And last but not least, Katie, Jared‘s niece, marched to her own drum and went completely wild with her house. Every row of roof shingles was a different color and candy type, and she even added an alligator in a moat in the front yard. For an eight-year-old, she was definitely creative. She earned the Unicorn award for creating the most unique and special gingerbread house. When she rushed into Jared’s arms, overwhelmed by the positive attention, everyone clapped and cheered for her, knowing how much she needed to be encouraged to be herself.

Watching Jared rub her back and whisper words of praise in her ear made my tummy tingle in the best way. He was such a good man. Obviously, he was a great uncle. And he was definitely becoming an amazing Daddy.

I wanted to stay longer at the party, but what my uncle probably thought was an excuse to leave early was really the truth, this time. I had a ton of last-minute orders come in and only a few days left to get them in the mail before I had to start charging for overnight shipping.

I gave each of my cousins a big hug and thanked my uncles for inviting me. I almost got away without any questions, but Michael was never one to leave something unsaid. Especially the things that made me uncomfortable and that I’d prefer to avoid.
